• PROHABIT – Multidisciplinary analysis of the lived environment to promote the implementation of the right to the city.

PROHABIT is a participatory and a multidisciplinary research project dedicated to analyse the impact that urban transformations have had on the dwellers of three neighbourhoods in Barcelona: Plus Ultra , Vallcarca, y Trinitat Nova.

The objective of this project is to analyse the impact that urban transformations have had on the inhabitants of three areas of the city of Barcelona: Plus Ultra, Vallcarca and Trinitat Nova. This analysis is done through a methodology that covers the fields of environmental psychology as well as of urbanism and architecture. The study entails the different dimensions (physical and social) and scales (domestic space, public space and interspaces) in each neighbourhood.

The comparative analysis of the case studies enable to make recommendations for the administration and private entities, organizations (neighbourhood associations, professional associations), professionals (architects, planners, psychologists) and to citizens to be able to participate in a more effective manner in decision-making processes that affect the transformation of the inhabited space.

  • The relationship between the transformation of the built environment and the adaptation and appropriation of the spaces by their inhabitants, is not much studied. Urban transformations are carried out without anticipating the collective and individual impact.

  • The aim of the research is to analyse and understand the processes of symbolization of the spaces that are built by citizens.

  • To study the lived environment means to analyse and represent the interactions between people and the spaces they inhabit. This study includes a multidimensional analysis of the physical structures (spaces, buildings) and of the individual and social behaviours (memory, identity, sense of place) are dovetailed with them.

  • The knowledge derived from the experience that citizens have about the environment they inhabit -after being systematized, represented and analysed- can be useful for defining future public policies.
